HERBAL TEA
A beverage with millennia of history behind it, tea is the preferred drink of kings and everyday people alike. This traditional drink we all know and love is brewed from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. This includes beverages like oolong, black and green tea.
Herbal teas, however, are different. They are a beverage made from infusing ingredients as varied as resins, bark, roots to dried fruits and spices. With such a variety, they come in a broad spectrum of tastes and flavors.
However, beyond their taste, herbal teas have some fantastic health-promoting properties. They have been used as natural remedies for hundreds of years. From soothing an upset stomach to calming the woes of insomnia, herbal teas are a natural miracle.
The drinking of herbal teas offers a diverse array of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other vital nutrients. Some of the most common potential benefits of drinking herbal teas include: aiding sleep, reducing inflammation, easing pain, boosting the immune system, improving cognitive function, and more.
However, to get the full benefits from drinking herbal tea, one needs to consider the following:
- The water requires to be boiling.
- The tea needs to be covered as it steeps.
- There is a marked difference between using fresh herbs vs. dried herbs as well as loose leaf teas vs. tea bags.
- It needs to steep for the proper amount of time; this depends on the tea and can vary from 3 to 15 minutes.
But perhaps one of the most intriguing things that herbal teas allow you to do is create your own blend. For example, by knowing the benefits of hibiscus herbal tea, you can add some peppermint for its soothing effects. Or you can combine chamomile with some ginger. The variety offered in Sir Jason’s shop can allow to create a herbal tea suited to your own particular needs.
Let’s not forget that herbal teas are vulnerable to air, light, humidity, and temperature. The ingredients of herbal teas can lose their color and flavor with age. They are sensitive to changes in moisture, light, and warmth. To protect your herbal teas, they should be stored in a dry location, such as a closet or pantry.
Herbs and spices have a definite shelf life; they don’t last forever. In the case of spices and herbs, their ideal period is from 8 to 12 months. For roots, barks, and berries, they shouldn’t be stored for longer than 14 to 16 months.
The variety of herbal tea is it’s most attractive aspect. There is no one single best herbal tea. Instead, each one offers its unique benefits. Let’s take a look at just some of the qualities of healing herbal teas:
- Peach (Prunus perspica) This tea is made by steeping the dried leaves of the peach tree along with the dried bark. It can aid in digestive health due to its high alkaline content. It also has a high number of antioxidants that can help keep the skin looking young.
- Cinnamon (Cinnamomum) This tea is made from a spice fro the inner bark of trees. It can help reduce the risk of heart disease by regulating cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It can also be beneficial in strengthening the immune system and boosting cognitive functions.
- Raspberry (Juniperus communis) – This tea is made by infusing the dried berry. It can help treat urinary tract issues and can be used as a diuretic.
- Chaparral (Larrea tridentata) This tea is made from the small leaves of the creosote bush. It can be used to help treat the common cold as well as bronchitis. Since it is a natural expectorant, it can help clear the airwaves of mucus. In addition, it can alleviate the symptoms of rheumatic pain and arthritis.
- Sage (Salvia Officinialis) Brewed from the leaves of this perennial plant. Sage has been known to help with treating digestive issues such as loss of appetite, flatulence, bloating and even heartburn.
This wide variety of herbal teas and others can be all found in Sir Jason Winter’s shop.
